Tax Benefits for Non Habitual Residents 

Did you know that Retired citizens or Pensioners who want to obtain residence in Portugal will be exempted from tax for 10 years.

HOW TO ACQUIRE THE STATUS OF A NON HABITUAL RESIDENT

Any foreigner who has not resided or paid tax in Portugal for the last 5 years.
  • Registering as a tax paying resident in the finance department (where you have to reside in Portugal for more than 183 days - consecutive or interrupted periods from year of application).  Individual should apply by 31 December a permanent residence, with intent to use his primary home as his habitual residence

Foreign retired citizens  and pensioners that apply for Portuguese residency are exempt from taxes in their country of origin and a reduced tax from Portuguese generated income for 10 years. 

TYPES OF INCOME ELIGIBLE FOR EXEMPTION UNDER THE NON HABITUAL RESIDENCE IN PORTUGAL 
  • salaries earned from non-Portuguese source, pensions paid abroad, and dividends obtained by non habitual residents are exempt from personal income tax provided the conditions are met and are  subject to tax under and existing Double Tax Treaty.
  • Possibility of buying or renting a property in Portugal, financing it with the monthly amount that would be paying the taxes in country of origin.
